Just some food for thought

WORTH WINNING

Hello World!

Happy 2016! I am so excited about the Road to Rio – excited for those competing that is! It’s taken some time to reach that point, coming to terms with the idea that I won’t be throwing my name into the hat for my own spot on the team.

While the roller coaster has been an emotional one, I’ve done some cool things along the way.

I made my broadcasting debut with NBC last year at the Penn Relays. I wasn’t awesome at it, but I’m definitely going to work to get better. I’ve since done ACC Indoor and a few other ESPN3 races, and I have Penn relays lined up again this year. I’m looking forward to getting comfortable in front of the camera and behind the mic.

I was selected to the WADA committee as a representative for the voice of clean athletes worldwide. In light of the recent events surrounding doping – particularly in the sport of track and field – this has been a tough job with long meetings and lots of discussion. Now is a critical time for action in favor of catching cheats and helping clean athletes compete without the worry of having a moment stolen unfairly. I’m dedicated to keeping my foot on the gas to encourage action ASAP.

Maternal yearning also kicked in, and in the absence of a marriage and children option being readily available, I decided to get a dog. I got a Great Dane who is now a year old, 135 lbs and tons of work. As if he wasn’t enough, my baby sister also moved in with me. We’re nine years apart, and unlike in the past she is now old enough to fit my clothes (barely, as I’ve filled out quite a bit post retirement). I’ve had many learning experiences with them around, the main thing being: I hate sharing!

I love them both dearly and they’ve been great practice in parenting as well as an endorsement for really good birth control. I’m not getting any younger, but I’m no longer in such a hurry to have kids.

With my biggest project, I’ve been fully baptized into the joys and struggles of entrepreneurship. From the highest highs of naming my company, forming an LLC, and getting business cards and logos done, to the lowest lows of struggling to do my job because supporting cast members are not playing their roles.

All these lessons were learned the hard/expensive way, but I’m finally off and running! Well, almost… I can’t wait to tell you all about my latest venture, but I’ll need to hold off due to the reasons listed above. Stay tuned though, because the announcement is close!

I’m excited about a new circle of friends and colleagues, new challenges and a new realm of success.

Ultimately, what the last 18 months have taught me is that there are many things in life that are Worth Winning.
